Ten Things I'd Do For A Cowboy

Journalist, Amanda Lang, wishes she’d never written the article, “Ten Things I’d Do for a Cowboy”. Thanks to her, cowboy Rafe Buchanan lost his marriage, his bank account and nearly his ranch because it had been her husband his wife ran away with. Now, two years and a divorce later, Amanda is back on Buchanan soil to write another article, film a documentary and deliver a face-to-face apology.

Rafe Buchanan wants the woman gone.  The Buchanan Wild Mustang and Burro Transition Ranch is his life and, after almost losing it once, he isn’t about to allow another disaster. But when he sets out to make the beauty voluntarily leave, his tactics take an unexpected turn.  Could there be more than wild horses in transition on his ranch?

Excerpt...

Unable to stop himself, he stepped closer. “What exactly are you offering, Ms. Lang?”

“I…” Blinking, she drew in a breath. Her rising chest captured his interest.

Despite her thin frame, the woman had curves. He’d never noticed that before. His gaze roamed down her belly, the curl of her waist, hips that almost came to his and long legs hugged by a pair of faded jeans. She was taller than Larissa, and although she tilted her head to look at him, the angle wasn’t as extreme as his ex-wife’s. Larissa used to complain about a crook in her neck. Amanda wouldn’t have that problem.

Sex with her would be different.

His pulse increased and he reached out to cup her face.  “You may be onto something there, Ms. Lang.” Thumb tracing her lips, he liked the full, soft feel and promise they held.

“Wh—what are you doing?” She asked against his finger.

Spikes of desire shot to his groin. “I’ve decided to take you up on your offer.”

“Offer? Wh—what offer?” Her eyes widened, reminding him of that new foal again.

“You’re offer to have sex.” He held tight and backed her into the wall when she tried to jerk away. “You said you’d give me anything, and I’ve decided, since Brian had sex with my wife, I should have sex with his.”

Personally, I love how the work was built around the transitioning of the American Mustangs and burros - a very contemporary and plainly heartfelt topic that adds a wonderful touch to this work. Michaels depicts the animals with great accuracy, but also great empathy; she brings them to life in this work.

"A trotting colt in the nearby corral, caught her attention. Held back from the last batch, he stood his ground with the remaining stragglers, but his soulful eyes appeared unsure..."

This is a fun, speedy read; a contemporary western-based romance that is believable and moving.

Ten Things I'd Do For A Cowboy is a journey of forgiveness, humility and new love. The romance between Rafe and Amanda slowly boils, gently building and growing in its intensity that had me sighing at the end. Sweet and tender, Ten Things I'd Do For A Cowboy is an utterly satisfying novella that is worth the time invested.

I liked this story because I really felt for Amanda. She was a victim through some terrible actions her ex-husband did to her and you’re heart just felt for her because of all the hardships she was still going through two years later because of it. It just goes to show you that when you aren’t looking for love, it comes knocking when and where you least expect it.

I was impressed by the depth of the characters, and enjoyed the storyline.  It was entertaining, as well as informative about the horse adoptions.  I was a bit disappointed by being able to continually predict Rafe’s reactions, but overall, I was very pleased with this story.  I look forward to more stories by this author.

Author Donna Michaels has chosen an interesting approach with the opening paragraphs of her contemporary western novella: Ten Things I’d Do for a Cowboy which evokes feelings of walking into the middle of a movie. It took me a while to figure out exactly what was going on, but I enjoyed the challenge and it worked well with the story. I also really appreciated the way she packs her dialogue with emotion. I knew exactly what her main characters, Amanda and Rafe, are feeling as they tiptoe around each other, battling feelings of remorse (Amanda) and anger/betrayal (Rafe).

Combine some old fashioned romance, add a modern day cowboy, a city girl and what do you get? Ten Things I'd Do For a Cowboy by author Donna Michaels. Rafe and Amanda create just the right amount of sparks off one another to generate fireworks for the reader. The storyline is a tried but true one and just right for those who prefer more romance than graphic sex. I enjoyed watching these two spar and then tumble into love. This book has all the ingredients for a short but sweet romantic ride into the sunset.
